Digital Citizenship and eSafety

The Keeping Safe curriculum and ICT general capability (in the Australian Curriculum) both highlight the need for students to experience online environments safely and responsibly. Teachers establish digital protocols with their classes and provide opportunities for students to practice digital etiquette when using devices to enhance learning. As well as operating under strict internet filters, strategies that are explicitly taught to students include;

  • keeping private information private,
  • reporting anything that makes students feel unsafe or uncomfortable
  • not sharing passwords with anyone
  • understanding digital ownership and intellectual property
  • evaluating the accuracy of online information
  • maintaining expected standards of online behaviour and understanding your “digital footprint”

We endeavor to support all families in keeping children safe online. The iParent resource on the Office of the eSafety Commissioner’s website has lots of resources and articles with practical ways of protecting children at home while using digital devices.
