Bishop’s Religious Literacy Assessment

The Year 5 students will be sitting the BRLA on Wednesday 8th August. The data is used as a guide to see how well our students are learning about their faith and its traditions. The Year 3 students will sit the BRLA the following week on Wednesday 15th August.

Absences

Thank you to the parents who have signed and returned absence note to teachers. We had a large number of absences resolved but need to follow up on the outstanding. Please check with your child or in their notes folder if you have signed a note to ensure it has reached the teacher. Thanks for your help with this matter.

URSTRONG- The Friendship Facts

Over the coming weeks, we will share some information from the URStrong program that is being taught in classes. The program focuses on teaching children how to form deep and meaningful friendships as they learn universal strategies that will apply to relationships in their lives.

These four simple truths allow our students to develop realistic expectations and feel successful in their friendships:

1. No friendship (or relationship) is perfect

Our students need to understand that conflict is a normal, natural part of a friendship – and they can survive it. When children learn to face their Friendship Fires, as we call them, and resolve conflict in a way that respects themselves and others – they are less likely to engage in unhealthy behaviours. Helping our students become master conflict-resolvers, rather than conflict-avoiders, fundamentally helps shift a school culture to a place of kindness and respect.

If you would like to skip ahead and find out more you can read Dana Kerford, founder of URStrong and presenter at the upcoming workshop at St Michael’s, on the positive education blog https://www.ggs.vic.edu.au/institute/blog/blog-posts/the-four-facts-of-friendships

Around the classes

This week in Year 5 students were investigating solids with Mrs Cullen. The students had a number of items and had to answer questions such as: Does it flow? Can it be scratched? Is it hard? It was great to hear the student discussion as they put their ideas forward and the group agreed or politely disagreed.

In Year 4, students were reciting poems to an audience of classmates and parents. It was evident they had put in time to memorise their poem and rehearse the performance as they were all so polished. What a fantastic activity with an authentic audience to engage the students.
