Message from the Principal – Newsletter 38

Dear Parents and Caregivers

This is often a very busy and stressful time of the year so we thank all members of our community for continuing to help us maintain a joyous spirit and a Catholic ethos during the last week of school by engaging respectfully with each other and with staff.

Please keep the Year 6 students and families in your prayers as they experience many important milestone events over the coming week and prepare to leave our community and graduate to secondary school! Thank you to Mrs Turner and all parents who were involved in various ways in preparing for the Year 6 Graduation Dance on Wednesday night. It was a lovely celebration of the 8 years that many of the Year 6 students have spent at St. Michael’s and a great night was had by all. We wish our Year 6 students and families all the best for the Awards Night on Monday night and their Graduation Mass on Friday morning.

Farewells

As the school year comes to a close next week, we will be farewelling three staff members: Juliana Primo, Julia Hodson and Del Murray. I thank all three ladies for their service to school and wish them all the very best on their future journeys. I must make particular mention of our finance officer, Del Murray. Del has provided 34 years of dedicated service to our school community – an amazing achievement! We thank Del for all she has contributed to our school community over the years. We wish her all the blessings that life has to offer in the future!

Please note that on Friday 11th December, the office will be closed from 11.00 to 11.20am to allow the students to farewell Mrs Murray.

New Shade Sails

It was very exciting to see our new shade sails installed this week. They are providing shade over the junior primary play equipment and look bright and vibrant in the centre of our school. This idea was brought to a P&F meeting by a parent and was funded by the P&F. Thank you to our P & F group for this important new addition to our school! This also serves to highlight the importance of attending P & F meetings to bring along your wonderful ideas! See the Assistant Principals’ section of this newsletter for photos.

Security Cameras 2021

Due to an increase in out of hours trespassers on school grounds, including a recent break in, the School Advisory Council (previously the School Board) has approved a quote for security cameras to be installed in the January school holidays. These cameras will be monitoring the outdoor areas of the school grounds only and the appropriate signage will be displayed as per legislation requirements. Hence, please be aware that from 2021 all outdoor areas on the school grounds will be under video surveillance 24 hours a day. The footage will be securely stored and the only people with access to the footage will be the members of the school leadership team.

Advent Giving – Wheelchairs for Kids

St. Michael’s was thrilled to be able to make a donation of over $500 to Wheelchairs for Kids from our recent gold coin donation fundraiser. If you are looking for ideas for advent giving as a family to ensure that your Christmas gift giving includes some charitable support to those less fortunate, perhaps consider donating a wheelchair to a child in an under-developed nation. For these children, receiving a wheelchair is life changing. It not only allows them the freedom of mobility but allows them to go to school for the first time and allows their caregiver to seek employment to better support the family. $200 provides a wheelchair to a child, however, if this isn’t within your budget, Wheelchairs for Kids gratefully accepts donations of any amount. Brother Olly and his team of volunteers ensure that all monies donated go to those who need it. If you would like to change the life of a child for Christmas through a private donation, please  go to: https://wheelchairsforkids.org/donate/

2021 Parent Information Night

Given that Parent Information Night is traditionally held on the Monday of Week 2 in Term 1, this doesn’t provide us much opportunity next year to remind you of the date in advance. So please make a note in your 2021 diaries that Parent Information Night will be held on Monday 8 February 2021.

End of Semester Reports

Teachers have been busy preparing end of semester reports. A reminder that these will be available on SEQTA on Monday 7 December and parents are welcome to make an appointment to meet with their child’s teacher from 8 – 10 December if they would like to discuss their child’s report.

Awards Night and Edudance Concert

A reminder that, due to COVID-19 social distancing requirements, we have had to modify the structure of the Awards Night and Edudance Concert (Monday 7 December).

To minimise the number of people attending the event at any given time, the evening will be conducted in two sessions:

  1. K – 2 Edudance performances: 5.30 – 5.50pm

Intermission

  1. Awards night, Choir and Years 3 – 6 Edudance performances: 6pm

Unless you have students performing in both sessions, families will be asked to only attend the session that their child/ren is/are involved in. Please refer to the letter posted by Ryan Powles for further details including entry and exit points.
