Message from the Principal – Newsletter 13

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Please keep Mrs Tania Falappi and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Tania’s son Kyle, who was an ex-student of St. Michael’s, passed away on Monday. The whole St. Michael’s community send our love, support and deepest sympathies to Tania and her family. We ask for your understanding during this time with the uniform shop opening times. Next week, the uniform shop will be open on Tuesday afternoon only at 2.30pm. Our sincere thanks to Karen Swindale for filling in.

NAPLAN

Well done to our Year 3 and 5 students who participated in NAPLAN testing this week. NAPLAN has been in place since 2008 for students in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9 and tests the essential skills for every child to progress through school in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy. Over time the tests provide schools with some of the data we use to assist in making whole school planning decisions. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, and is designed to illustrate the range of student performance across the country. It assesses skills that students are already learning through the school curriculum. NAPLAN tests are constructed to give students an opportunity to demonstrate skills they have learned over time through the school curriculum

As you may be aware from media reports, given that this year was the first time that all schools completed NAPLAN online (with the exception of Year 3 writing), some connectivity issues were experienced during the testing which are currently being investigated by ACARA. St. Michael’s experienced some minor connectivity issues on the first day of testing during the Year 5 writing test, however, overall the assessments ran smoothly. Congratulations to the Year 3 and 5 students for trying your best, working hard and tackling these assessments with such maturity. No matter what, we are proud of you! Congratulations to Mrs Marina Thompson, Mrs Jemima Saunders, Miss Julia Hodson and Mr Ryan Powles for preparing the students so well and for a seamless administration of the tests at a school level.

P & F Meeting Monday 20th May

A reminder that we have a P & F meeting scheduled for this Monday 20th May. All are welcome!

Don’t forget that Entertainment Books are currently on sale with part proceeds going to the P & F. You can purchase either the book or digital membership and they make a great gift! Book Donations for Outdoor Library

We are currently working on creating an outdoor library for students to use at break times which will be located on the Year 1 verandah. We are seeking donations of second hand children’s books so that students can have some options to read in addition to their current library book. If you have any second books that you are able to donate, please send them into reception.
