Dear Parents,

Our Lady of Fatima Statue Pilgrimage

In 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary, is said to have appeared six times as an apparition to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. The children described the apparition as “the lady more brilliant than the sun” and reported that Mary had told them on each occasion to pray the rosary daily to obtain peace and bring an end to World War I. The apparitions were declared worthy of belief by a bishop in 1930 and in 1946, Pope Pius XII granted a canonical coronation to the venerated image enshrined at the Chapel of the Apparitions of Fatima. In 1954, Pope Pius XII elevated the status of the Sanctuary of Fatima to a Minor Basilica. To this day, Catholics all over the world participate in pilgrimages to Fatima. Since that time, Mary our Mother has also been known as Our Lady of Fatima and Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fatima.

In 2017, to mark the 100th anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima’s apparitions, Pope Francis blessed six statues to be sent around the world and this weekend, St Joseph’s Parish in Bassendean are hosting one of these very special statues. The parish are hosting an event at 7pm on Sunday evening (19th August) which will include Mass, Benediction. On Monday morning, St Michael’s School students will be celebrating Mass at 9am to mark the occasion and from 10am each class will spend some time in the church with the statue praying the rosary and listening to a talk about the statue from the missionary sisters who are travelling with the statue. At 11.30am the statue will depart from the church. Everyone is most welcome to join us.

Catholic Performing Arts Festival

Congratulations to Mrs Doreen Panizza and the choir for another spectacular performance at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival this week. Thank you to Mrs Lola Stewart for assisting and Mr Jonathan Fernandes for accompanying the choir on the piano. Best of luck to Mr David Caddy and the Year 4 class for their choral speech performance at the festival on Tuesday 28th August (9.15am at Morley Rec. Centre in the Wellington Room). Please see the student achievement section for information on recent special awards for St. Michael’s students at the festival.

Book week

Please note that whilst our term calendar does acknowledge that next week is the official Book Week and that we will be having a Book Week incursion on Monday 27th August, there is no dress up parade at St Michael’s during Book Week. As has been the case in the past, we will be dressing up and celebrating Book Week in conjunction with our Book Fair in Week 9 this term. Our dress up parade will be held on Monday 10th Sept.

Year 1 Assembly – Friday 24th August

We are looking forward to the Year 1 assembly item next week! Please note that due to our athletics carnival field events being held on the same day, our assembly next week will begin promptly at 8.50am.
