Library News and A Couple of Requests Please

Goodness, we already past the halfway mark of Term 1 2020! Where did those 6 weeks go?

Your children are managing extremely well during Tuesday’s lending session in their library whilst we in the library continue to make changes. We are relocating the books into new areas, hoping this will allow a more functional use of the space.

The books in the Lexile literacy program are now in a roomier area, giving the students more space to browse and choose their book. We still have some labelling to do there.

We have moved some of the popular series into an area where, if a student has read one book in a series, they know where they can go directly to get the next one.

We are in the process of sorting the non-fiction books into genres. Most libraries now, are changing to this system and it is going to be such an advantage for the students. When they want to choose a book that they have an interest in, for example, ‘reptiles,’ ‘cars,’ ‘baking,’ or ‘science’ they will find them all in the one area.

These too will be clearly labelled on the shelves.

We also have plans to make the picture books more ‘independently’ accessible for the lower year groups, so watch this space.

At the beginning of the new 2020 school year we completed the process of installing a new library management system. As with any new technology, however, it is taking a while to explore and educate ourselves on all the features. This new system is fabulous, and I am hoping that, soon, we will be able to activate some of the student features for use. The students will eventually be able to browse the library items from home and perhaps decide what they want to look at the following Tuesday. They will see if the book is in the library and put a hold on it or reserve it, if it is not. When the item is back in the library, it will be waiting for them. Very exciting times ahead.

** The content of a few books has been brought to our attention which parents felt was no longer age appropriate or keeping line with the school ethos. PLEASE can I ask, if you find any book that you feel has inappropriate content, do not hesitate to tell us. Please contact us or pop a note in with the book on its return. We have some very old books in the library, the content of which is no longer suitable. There is no possible way, we can personally read all the books in the library and are guided by the bibliographic information and the providers of the Lexile books, as to a book’s recommended readers age. Thanks for this!

** CALLING ON LIBRARY BOOK and LEXILE PROGRAM BOOK COVERERS please.

We have lost most of our library volunteer book covering angels as their children have left St. Michael’s for secondary school. Huge luck to the 2019 Year 6’s with that often-challenging transition. We miss you but you will all nail it, I am certain!

PLEASE contact me, Vicki at: Library@stmichaelsbass.wa.edu.au or a message at Reception,

if you can help me, the students and their library with this very important job, as the books cannot be shelved until they are covered and any help would be HUGELY appreciated!

Thank you!

Late Arrivals to School

Please note, if your children are late to school (ie arrive after 8:40am), they must be signed in at the Office. Otherwise they will show as absent on the roll. Thank you.

Absence Calls/Notes/Emails

Please note, after an absence a SIGNED NOTE needs to be provided to the teacher on your child’s return to school. The Department of Education Services has confirmed that whilst an SMS or phone message is NOT a substitute for a signed note when reporting absences, an email meeting the following criteria can be accepted:

  • FULL name of the student
  • CLASS / roll group of the student
  • Date
  • Reason for the absence
  • FULL NAME of the PARENT/GUARDIAN at the end of the message (the ‘from’ email address is not sufficient).

Please send emails meeting the above criteria to:  admin@stmichaelsbass.wa.edu.au or fill in the online absentee form on the Connected app.

Please note, teachers do not get to sit down and check their emails first thing in the morning, so if you have emailed the teacher regarding your child’s absence, they may not receive the information until later in the day. Therefore, please do not be upset if you receive an SMS or phone call from the Office to clarify the absence. For this reason, a phone call to the ABSENTEE LINE 6278 9802 is a more efficient way of communicating an absence than an email to the class teacher.
