Kagan Open Day

On Wednesday this week, St Michael’s hosted an open day for visiting educators to come and see cooperative learning in practice. It was wonderful to be in a position to showcase our fantastic staff demonstrate engaging and effective strategies with our students. Congratulations to all the teachers for sharing their expertise so generously.

Book Fair

Last term the student’s enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters and participating in our Book Parade during our Book Fair week. There were so many wonderful costumes from handmade robots, unicorns and many Hogwarts students! Thanks go to all the parents and staff for supporting this event as part of our Book Fair and Book Week celebrations. Congratulations to all the class winners for best dressed!

The P-6 classes were treated to a special book reading from our Principal, Dr Galos, in honour of Book Week and to share a literary experience together. Pre-Primary to Year 2 enjoyed “Now That’s A Hat” by Heath McKenzie, Year 3 and Year 4 heard “The Panda Problem” by Deborah Underwood and Year 5 and Year 6 listened to “Liarbird” by Laura Bunting. Thank you Dr Galos!

Open Night

Late last term, our school hosted its annual Open Night for families to come and visit in the evening with their children in celebration of their learning so far this year. It was wonderful to see such a great turnout and for students to proudly show their parents all their hard work. Thank you to all staff for highlighting the exceptional job our students are doing in their classrooms.

Thankyou Beary Much!

Special thanks go to one of our parents, Mrs Alexandra McIlwaine, who kindly offered to sew up our torn bear. He is looking and smelling fresh and clean after his special treatment and ready for circulation as one of our beary important Making Jesus Real awards!

Thank You P&F

Thank you to our P&F for organising our parent event at the end of last term with Butterfly Education about children’s body confidence and self-esteem. Body image is consistently reported as one of the top three concerns for young people. With society’s increasing obsession with appearance and diet it can be difficult for parents to know how to support positive body image.

Here are some of the top tips from Butterfly Education for building children’s body confidence:

  1. Focus on wellbeing: not weight or size
  2. Ensure children and teens eat regularly
  3. Whenever you can, aim to eat meals as a family
  4. Separate eating from other activities such as homework or TV
  5. Encourage children to use their body cues: hunger; satiety
  6. Have a range of nutritious food available
  7. Avoid being restrictive or controlling with food
  8. Use positive language and words; ‘sometimes’ and ‘often’
  9. Avoid using food to soothe moods or reward behaviour

It’s also important that we are aware of our own body image and that we are conscious of the messages we send to our children. Try to avoid making negative comments about the way you look. If your child knows you feel comfortable with your body, this can help them feel comfortable in their own skin. It’s best to avoid talking about diets, ‘naughty’ eating habits, or your weight and size so your child doesn’t develop the impression that weight and size are highly valued.
